Some of my earliest memories are of trips taken as a family. Something about it's uniqueness makes it burn into the human memory. From the musty smell of suitcases taken from the attic, to dad giving the car a tune-up, family vacation came with unique memories that I can still remember as clearly as if they happened yesterday. (Cont. below)

Studies have shown that being in unusual environments opens up our senses to absorb information in ways that we wouldn't normally. We walk down the hallway in our homes or workplaces thousands of times and scarcely remember these individual experiences. Yet if you enter the Mamertine Prison in Rome just once, where Paul and Peter were held before their execution, you will remember it forever. You will remember that winding metal staircase. You will remember the moist, dark, damp, and dank smell, and the sense of awe that this is quite literally the place where two of the greatest Christian figures were held in their final days.

Consequently, the lessons learned on such expeditions are forever embedded into our souls through our minds, which are much more open to remembering while traveling in extraordinary locations.
